헤르페스 손끝염 (Herpetic whitlow)은 HSV-1 또는 HSV-2 감염으로 발생할 수 있습니다. HSV-1 감염은 주로 바이러스에 노출된 의료 종사자에게서 전파됩니다. 구강 분비물에 노출된 치과·의료 종사자에게 가장 흔히 발생하며, HSV-1 구강 감염이 있는 어린이가 엄지손가락을 빨 때도 전파될 수 있습니다. 또한 HSV-2에 감염된 성인(20~30세)과 생식기 접촉을 통해 전파되는 경우도 흔합니다.
